Stephen Shaffer ScD, FAAOMPT
At a young age Stephen decided to become a mechanic because the idea of fixing things seemed both appealing and rewarding. He stuck with that idea for a while until at the age of 12 he was injured and ended up in a physiotherapy clinic for the first time as a patient. During this experience he saw treatment tables and therapists instead of car lifts and mechanics but the parallels were obvious. That realization not only led to Stephen’s decision to become a physiotherapist but it has also served to fuel his drive towards becoming an expert clinician.
Clinically speaking, Stephen is a bilingual (English-Spanish) clinical specialist, educator, and scientist with sixteen years of experience in the physiotherapy profession. He has worked primarily in orthopedic settings and specializes in the evaluation and management of spinal, extremity, and jaw disorders. Additionally, his professional experience has involved extensive time managing chronic pain as well as specializing in both complex and rare cases. Stephen prides himself on making sound decisions on behalf of his patients and strives to ensure that they gain maximal benefit from their healthcare experiences. In clinical practice he places an emphasis on research informed evaluation and management as well as manual physical therapy, clinical reasoning, and shared decision-making.
After graduating with a master’s degree in physical therapy from Nazareth College of Rochester, NY Stephen went on to complete residency, fellowship, and academic doctoral training in advanced orthopaedics. In addition to clinical practice, Stephen is a researcher with experience on topics related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and advanced practice physiotherapy rights, he has experience teaching continuing education courses on neck, jaw, and headache pain, and is currently the primary investigator on a project seeking to successfully address the symptoms associated with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a form of dysautonomia. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). When not busy with these activities, Stephen helps with the AAOMPT Podcast, which is an ongoing interview show that addresses a wide array of topics related to orthopaedics, and serves as a peer reviewer for an array of scientific journals.
While proud of all of his professional accomplishments, the thing that truly drives Stephen is helping people get better. This deep seeded passion stems from a lifelong process of helping his brother, who has disabilities, traverse this world in the best way possible. As a result of being a caregiver early in his life, Stephen learned the value in helping others, which carried over nicely into the physiotherapy profession. After obtaining a license to practice it followed very naturally that he learned to value helping people find solutions to their healthcare problems. This shines through with his excitement, energy, and passion, all of which are consistently part of the personality and processes that he brings to the clinic.
When not working Stephen enjoys bicycling, kayaking, fishing (open water or ice), hiking, and traveling. He also enjoys learning about new topics and has a passion for growing (and eating) local food. As a new resident of eastern Ontario he hopes to begin learning French and to explore all of the greatness both Cornwall and the surrounding areas have to offer.
